An English translation of Hegel's introduction to his lectures on the philosophy of history, based directly on the standard German edition by Johannes Hoffmeister, first published in 1955. Lectures on the Philosophy of History Questions and Answers. The book includes a fresh translation of “Phenomenology” and “Psychology,” an extensive section-by-section commentary, and a sketch of the system to which this work is an introduction. Examining why the study of history as a science was not as advanced as other disciplines, the author of this book, originally published in 1933, examines the arguments in the controversy of what the object of history should be. It is perhaps unnecessary to say anything respecting the difficulty of making any adequate translation of Hegel’s writings. In Part 1 of this book, originally published in 1980, the focus is on certain claims of R. G. Collingwood regarding the nature of historical understanding, of Charles Beard about the possibility of an objective reconstruction of the past, and of J. W. N.
