The easy stuff? The authors extensive background in teaching mathematics shines through in this balanced, explicit, and engaging text, designed as a primer for higher- level mathematics courses. Being able to understand the correspondence between linear maps and matrices as an isomorphism of k-algebras is a wonderful thing. Valenza's treatment of the subject serves as an exemplar of theory and abstraction and gives students much needed early insight into what math is actually about. Maybe it's ok for those with a strong math background, but for those of us that aren't majoring in pure mathematics, this book is far too dense and vague to fully comprehend. I am keeping this book as a reference for future math classes. The book assumes that the reader knows many theorems that aren't even presented anywhere between the covers. They elegantly demonstrate process and application and recognize the byproducts of both the achievements and the missteps of past thinkers. Very good at explaining proofs and rules. Basic Analysis I: Introduction to Real Analysis, Volume I. Great book, great price and fast delivery. Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2012. Please try your request again later. In fact, I struggled that entire semester, and eventually emerged with a pretty shaky understanding of linear algebra. In addition, they will develop an appreciation of the different methods of proof (contradiction, induction), the value of a proof, and the beauty of an elegant argument. To be fair, the book attempts to explore a broad range of basic mathematics, yet the ease of the first four chapters almost castrates one from the theory to a redundant and over-simplistic examples. Research mathemati- cians, both pure and applied, view mathematics the same way. Uniquely among algebra texts at this level, it introduces group theory early in the discussion, as an example of the rigorous development of informal axiomatic systems. I had hated math before, so it felt like a whole new world had been opened up to me. I'm keeping the book as a resource for more advanced math classes, but most likely I'll just go find another book for that. This is a great book. This structure is absolutely essential to knowing what's going on: My father took a (less superior) linear algebra class many years ago, and he never understood the concepts behind the mathematical manipulations; I actually sat down with him and taught him the things that I learned in Prof. Valenza's class.
