The 6m has a very fat and big sound and the underslung variant further amplifies that, absolutely a jazz horn. AM also thinking of upgrading the Mouthpiece to a Beechler tonalex and of getting a new ligature. Hodges played a Buescher Big B Aristocrat (late 1930's model), and I THINK he used a Brilhart mouthpiece. I did a little research and couldn't find anything directly on this question about Rabbit's m/p. . Most likely a Tonelin. I have many CD's of his work and I have seen sleeve pictures of him with a Conn 6M (microtuner neck verifies it) and of course Bueschers from early Aristocrats to the "Aristocrat 400" 141 model (Buescher 50's 'Crat script with rear bell keys) and the TH&C 400's to plain 400's (as in previous posters picture) ending with a Vito. 2 (Remastered) 2. I can't say I'd recommend the big bell series as I feel like they are basically yamahas with worse build quality however its important to try them regardless of what anyone says to get an idea of them. FWIW, I saw Hodges with the Ellington band in Worcester Mass in the fall of 1957. I had built his 400 and then later got to blow the horn after we did some work on it. Of course I had to call the office and have them send down the inspection record for that horn. A few other vintage horns I reccomend are the Holton rudy wiedoeft and buffet dynaction/super dynaction. It is not easy to get info on mouthpieces used by Johnny Hodges , but after studying a few pictures I've come to this list : Procope played a Buescher Aristocrat with a Brilhart "Tonalin". The Buescher Aristocrats and 400's were being made there at that time. You might even be able to get a solid silver one in your budget, I know someone with one and the sound is top quality, you can’t match it. The only horn that has the Buescher sound is a Buescher.
