I can't say I'd recommend the big bell series as I feel like they are basically yamahas with worse build quality however its important to try them regardless of what anyone says to get an idea of them. FWIW, I saw Hodges with the Ellington band in Worcester Mass in the fall of 1957. I had built his 400 and then later got to blow the horn after we did some work on it. A few other vintage horns I reccomend are the Holton rudy wiedoeft and buffet dynaction/super dynaction. The Buescher Aristocrats and 400's were being made there at that time. You might even be able to get a solid silver one in your budget, I know someone with one and the sound is top quality, you can’t match it. The only horn that has the Buescher sound is a Buescher.
