It stays in tune even when I don’t play it for awhile, which is nice. I purchased a Kanile’a Islander as my first ukulele. A tenor, beautiful—really beautiful—and plays like a dream. Great builders. But it is not a loud instrument. The results speak for themselves. Why the cheap plastic pins though? The tone is like no other. The koa they use is stunning – and they spend their time and money to replant koa trees, which is a nice touch. On the Oha-T, the compensated saddle means that intonation remains pitch-perfect for every note on the fretboard. Like a truss on a bridge, the equilateral triangles in Kanile`a’s bracing balances strength and lightness. Your email address will not be published. I love that the instrument is built on Oahu and the family-owned company restores and replants native Hawaiian rain forest and sources all their woods responsibly. When I first wanted to upgrade to a Hawaiian made instrument, Kanile’a was my first choice, and I still think it is the best choice. The only downside to the Islander was the fact that the sound did not project as much as the others around its price range and build. This one is a super tenor. I ended up fingerpicking through Andy Iona and Sam Cooke tunes, and soon found that this is an instrument for accompanying a voice, picking through chords, and filling a quiet room with sound. And my colleague just bought a Kanile’a tenor and is delighted with it. The Kanile’a gets about half of my playing time, the others have to duke it out for the rest Where it excels the most is playability. That’s because they look beautiful, sound great, and while they aren’t cheap by any means, they’re quite the value all across the line. Beautiful tone. Coming in around a grand, the K-1 Tenor is a stunning value in a totally Hawaiian made tenor with a fantastic look and tone. I like the looks and tone a lot… But I find it harder to strum bar-chords than in any of my other ukes. We currently have a Kanile’a Concert & Tenor ukulele, and absolutely love the look, sound, feel and craftsmanship they put into all of their ukulele. It almost sounds more like a tenor. Even since I gotten my Kanilea Kuuipo Concert, my other ukes aren’t getting much attention at all. Corey goes over the new features of this model. With it's wider lower bout and TRU-R (Total Resonating Ukulele-Redesigned) bracing system, this instrument is a power pack of sound. The tone is rich and silky and thanks to the great set up I have not had to do anything to it since it arrived other than tune it. And the tone is that classic warm, breezy Hawaiian koa sound. It plays like a dream. The sound is bright and happy, though very subjective to humidity (the humidity where I live fluctuates wildly). I am the proud owner of two Kanilea ukes. To keep the costs down we also have a satin finish. MADE IN U.S.A. This model has a diamond inlay at the fretboard in sand and their “cobra” slotted headstock. In fact we sell more Kanile’a in store and on line than any other high end ukulele brand. I did wonder about the plastic pins on an otherwise all-wood instrument, but a quick look at Google left me satisfied that ebony or bone replacement pins would be a simple and affordable upgrade. But I knew I was absolutely sure when I had to go back and edit the word “sweet” out of this review a dozen times, because sweet is really the best way to describe this ukulele. You can definitely hear the difference – there is more bottom end to the tone and more volume. Kanilea Custom Shop - Premium Koa SUPER Tenor Ukulele! I am starting to feel guilty about not playing my other ukes more. Yes! You can’t ask for much more. That said, it’s one uke I won’t ever part with.
